I recently had a show at Sweet Laurette in Port Townsend in which I debuted my paintings from my Centrum Residency at Fort Worden. It was very successful as I sold many of my works! Looking forward to showing more of my landscapes in Ballard and will keep you posted where and then that will happen..........

I have been busy painting acrylic landscapes and continue to concentr ate on my limited color palette, shapes and unification of objects; Street scenes mostly of my own neighborhood still captivate me as I want to make the ordinary a thing of beauty. I seem to be moving from the panoramic format to the square.

New Landscapes -The Neighborhood

I love my neighborhood; the array of bungalows and craftsman houses, sidewalks with narrow streets with parking strips and a few street trees planted here and there. This is Ballard after all, where the fisherman cut down all the trees when they settled here years ago.

It is a very walkable area with kids on wheels and pet owners strolling by at all times of the day. It has inspired me to paint it and I have been working on this series since the summer and have noticed how the light changes things throughout the day. I love the way violet splashes across the evening sky and beads of pearly orange create peak holes through the trees.

Small Landscapes

Here are three new 6"x6" landscapes on wood panel .

My latest series - scenes of my neighborhood in Ballard, also represents residential areas in general. Scenes that may get overlooked as passersby are often in too much a hurry to take note of beauty of the sea, ordinary buildings and other structures.

As a result of a class I took on working from photos, I disregard the original color and create my own limited palette often reflecting how I feel at the time. I find working on wood panel more enjoyable and conducive to working with acrylic than canvas as it glides across the surface more easily. Now what am I going to do with all those canvases that I have piled up in my studio?

My Newest Gallery

I am happy to let announce that I now have Pioneer Square Representation! A few months ago I was asked to join Fraker/Scott Gallery. They have only been around a short while, are in the middle of all the action in Pioneer Square and participate in the First Thursday Artwalks. They also put on a separate Artist Reception during the middle of the month for friends and family where refreshments are served and artists speak on their work.

For my "into" into the gallery I took place in the Door show and painted a garden on a door that I had hanging around in my garage. The title of the piece is "Opening".

Currently I have one of my reverse paintings on glass, a Madonna and Child, in the icon juried show and I will be featured in November/December botanical show and display works, some of which have been shown out of town but not in a Seattle gallery before. Whatcom Museum, Bellingham, WA

I am happy to announce that I have a piece in the "Fate of the Forest" show at the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham. This acrylic painting was inspired by my artist residency at Fort Worden last summer and is entitled "The Woods Beyond" so titled because although the houses are all nestled on this side of the forest, be it cayotes, deer or something else, one never knows what will emerge from the other side. It was fun to attend the opening and view this show with all it's varied interpretations.

Urban Landscapes

I just finished a series of landscape paintings inspired scenes in my neighborhood. In these urban landscapes I love playing with a limited color palette and simple shapes to turn everyday scenes
into something worth looking at. They are all on mat board, about
7"x 14" and I intend to frame them up larger under glass. They will also serve as prototypes for larger works on panel.

January Warmth

I just returned from southern California. It was good to connect with relatives and feel the warmth of the sun on my face and arms. If if weren't for the TRAFFIC I would consider moving down there.

I did a fair amount of watercolor sketching on my trip. The Huntington gardens were very beautiful - especially the grounds with the desert garden. Santa Monica is so colorful and I love the Balboa Peninsula at Newport Beach and all the wonderful beach cottages and landscaping. Laguna beach was also very inspiring with the hills in the background. I am posting a couple of my sketches.

New Beginnings

Well, here it is January of 2011 already. I am hoping for a little more snow to fall to round out our winter. I have several shows coming up this in the next few months which I am getting ready for so I have not been as prolific at making new work. I am so excited to have sold 22 pieces of my flora paintings to the new Swedish Hospital wing in Ballard. They love my work and were very happy to have a Ballard resident displayed there. And they cleaned me out of my 12"x12" panels so I am in the process of making more. These are some examples of some of the work they took.

I will be in a group show called Saints and Sinners at Museo in Langley on Whidbey Island later this month and will have 3 pieces in this group show. Here is one of them:

My Latest Wine Label

Last summer Woodward Canyon selected my art from several entries for their Artist Series Label this year. I am honored to be their 17th artist in the series. A couple of weeks ago I made the trip over to Walla Walla for the release party where I signed bottles and posters at the tasting. They have a gallery as well there where I am displaying my art for several months. They made beautiful poster out based on the label as well.

My husband and I recently returned from a three week vacation traveling around Turkey. For me it was an inspiring time of soaking up and expressing all the art around me. I filled up my Moleskin Watercolor Journal and went on a hunt for another one while on the Aegean coast. What an accomplishment- finding the art supply store with limited (extremely limited ) Turkish! I am glad we found it though because some of my last paintings were my best. Here is a sampling.

I am finally getting around to posting paintings from my self directed Artist Residency at Centrum in Port Townsend which I did at the end of summer. Since then I have been to Turkey and back (more on that later). I was inspired by the natural beauty of the sea and the land and the surrounding architecture and created 14 small acrylics and nearly filled up my sketchbook with watercolors and drawings. Here is a sampling of some of my acrylic paintings. It was fun limiting my palette to four colors in a gorgeous, light- filled studio with way more space that I ever could have used.

Summer seems to be drawing near to a close with the days getting shorter and the evenings getting cooler (although I always like to hang onto it into October). It is a time for reaping what we have sown and for enjoying the fruits of our labor. I have been making reverse paintings on glass throughout this season and have really been enjoying the
process.

My materials overhead has been kept low as I have been painting on found or recycled glass. These paintings have been small and I am working my way up to a larger scale. This little series of persimmon paintings represent some of the bounty of what will be in store us as we transition into the next season, as we notice that flowers have gone from bloom to fruit production.

I thought for the summer I would try something that I never have before. I am "self taught" in this medium. Not exactly sure how I got into it but I had some small scrap pieces of glass around and was up for a challenge. You start with the detail first and them work backwards. Kind of like monotype (with which I have 15 years of experience). Once you put paint down it is nearly impossible to change it. That is the challenge but the effects amazing. Glossy shinny surface, clear colors and no need to protect the front of it because it is already under glass! Here are a few samples. More images to come.

Whenever I travel I take my small box of watercolors with me. There is nothing I enjoy more than soaking up the sights, sounds and scents of a new environment while touching brush to paper. Rather than trying to portray scenes exactly as they are, I prefer to capture their essence and let my mind fill in the details upon review. I rarely take photographs of my travels. A snapshot can never do the scenery justice or truly capture the ambiance and when I paint, I look - really look.

I am ever longing to go to exotic places to paint. I love the quaintness of Europe and the trade winds and heat of the tropics, but one summer limited by funds, I became a traveler in my native Seattle and it’s surrounding areas. Painting what had become the ordinary forced me to see things in a new and fresh way. The paintings in this blogt represent such a local trip. They are my little treasures. I hope you like them too.

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council and the City of Shoreline are proud to present Sea, Shore & Sky, a new show focusing on the natural landscape. Artists Malcolm Edwards (photography), Betty Hageman (painting),
Lisa Snow Lady (mixed media acrylics) and Sue Robertson (painting) each use their individual art forms to capture the world around us both in real and abstract ways. This exhibit runs from May 5 – July 30, 2010 at the Shoreline City Hall Gallery.

Betty’s recent work looks closely at microenvironments, the background surfaces brought forward as subject; archetypal habitats such as earth/dirt, water/ice, fire/plasma, air/gas/sky. Sue Robertson – Acrylic Painting
Sue Robertson works primarily with acrylic on canvas, board or watercolor paper. Her style is loose and very colorful. She considers herself an experimental painter and often incorporates elements such as ink, graphite, paper, clay and whatever other things she happens across. Whether she is painting figures, still life or abstracts, the subject is simply a vehicle for the color and stroke. www.suerobertson.net.

Also on exhibit will be two large carved wooden heads by Vashon sculptor Shawn Nordfors. Nordfors has exhibited his work throughout the Northwest and has several pieces in public collections in the area. The sculptures will be on exhibit at City Hall through August. www.shawnnordfors.com.

The Artful Garden

My large scale art has been completed and will be on it's way to Whidbey Island tomorrow for my show that opens next Saturday at MUSEO, 215 1st St, Langley, WA 98260. The reception is from 5-7pm. Continuing to work with floral subject matter I explore the contrast between lightness and darkness in reference to hope and joy that emerges from sorrow.

Also included is garden related sculptures created by several other artists. Hope you can make it.

Presently I am working on art for my show in Langley, Whidbey Island in April. It will be garden related with some 3d garden sculpture from various artists as well. My work will range from large work on canvas to very small work on panel. The large ones are still in progress. I think this will be my best show ever. (Or at least it should be, given the amount of energy I am putting

into it).

Also, I will be showing my mixed media prints in Tacoma at the Green Spot Teahouse and Gallery in April and May with another artist. Details and directions to come.

I just finished a modular painting on the parable of the sower that Jesus told about the seed falling on various terrains. My version is more about the seed and how it is received. It is a modular piece and can be formatted in a square or vertically.

Fall is in the air and I consider the birds as they seek new habitat just as I seek warmer spaces to nourish my soul. It is a time to nest. My new series of bird paintings is inspired by my husband, Jim who is a birder - especially when we travel. I pack my paints and he brings his binoculars. My own birding experiences take me not much further than my small backyard. The garden sanctuary that I have created attracts birds from the tiny hummingbirds drawn to my still blooming hanging fuchsia to the flicker perched vertically on the snag of a telephone pole viewed out my kitchen window, singing his shrill monotone song. These busy and playful creatures bring me much joy.

Soon I will bundle up my series of small paintings and send them off the Museo, a beautiful art gallery on Whidbey Island where I have been showing for several years, for the Holiday Gift Sale. The Christmas bird count is coming up soon. I have not yet participated in this but may do it this year.

Snow Lady Summer Recap

Welcome to my new blog. The paint is still wet...................

Here are some highlights that I am eager to share:

This summer (during the heat wave) I moved into my new studio just across the hall, still minutes from my home in Ballard. It was kind hard to leave the space I had grown to be so comfortable in for 6 years, but my new studio is cheerful, bright and spacious and I look forward to a brand new start.

Summer is over but my drought tolerant series acrylics can still be seen at Portalis Wine Shop in Old Ballard for another week. Also in Ballard I was given a wall of my own at the new Portage Bay Cafe near the Ballard Lock where I am currently showing mixed media monotypes on paper of fruit. The work fits in well in the space and it is a delicious place to eat too!

I am excited to have my first wine label created for the Artist Series at Harbinger Winery in Port Angeles. It is a small bottling - only 99 cases so this citrusy white is only available at their winery. A tasting will be held in November. Presently I am taking a little hiatus from botanical imagery and have been working on a series of small paintings "6"x6" of our feathered friends. Here are a few samples.
